Picture: Meet The Author, Lydia Corbett
Meet the Author was an enjoyable evening last week. Picasso's muse, Lydia Corbett, gave a fascinating talk about her life in France, in conversation with her daughter Isabel Coulton. Lydia. also known as Sylvette David, was born in Paris and grew up in the French countryside, before moving to the town of Vallauris on the French Riviera in the early 1950s. Picasso had a studio there and met Sylvette in 1954, when she was 19. She would often walk around the small town and one day recognized herself in one of Picasso's paintings!
Picasso soon asked Sylvette to model for him, and she was known for being 'the girl with the ponytail' in a series of paintings and drawings. Picasso also created the 'Heads of Sylvette' series of molded metal sculptures, which stand to this day in Rotterdam and New York. In the 1950s, Sylvette was offered film roles, but declined these, preferring to avoid the media attention! In 1968, Lydia moved to England and took up painting. She has been practicing as an artist ever since internationally, painting beautiful works in watercolours and oils. Lydia has written a book about her life and experiences, 'I was Sylvette'.
Unfortunately, Kennaway House did experience problems with the sound system during the talk, and Kennaway House are looking into the matter. Kennaway House would like to assure everyone, with their continued support, that Kennaway House will endeavour to replace the system to make it more reliable as soon as possible. Kennaway House will ensure your subscriptions and donations will be put to good use for this cause. Kennaway House would also like to thank the volunteers for all their help, especially the ladies who have helped in the past and the present with our Meet The Author events.

It has been a very busy May at Kennaway House, with lots going on and two fantastic exhibitions taking place.'Generating Imagery' by Lilly Caldwell, a student at Central St Martins, University of Arts London, featured beautiful monochromatic prints and photographs. In 'Beyond the Storm', Jacqueline displayed vibrant paintings featuring a range of natural subjects.
